The fruit is sourced from Quarry Ridge vineyard which lies just outside the Macedon Ranges wine region. It was harvested and sorted by hand then destemmed but not crushed the fruit, with the aim of a high percentage of whole berries to amplify fragrance. After natural fermentation and extended maceration, the grapes were pressed and transferred to used French hogsheads and puncheons for malolactic fermentation and maturation.
The ninth vintage, the wine is fresh with red fruits, cherry, and some undergrowth, and framed by fine tannins. A pure, dense mid palate is followed by a long, balanced finish.

A little history

Silent Way’s small 1.2 ha vineyard was purchased by Matt and his partner Tamara Grischy in 2007. It sits 550 meters above sea level, so it sure can be cool up there. Like most producers in the region, they are small and family owned. Their snake label wines feature grapes grown at other interesting sites with the intention to make authentic, fresh, bright wines full of flavour and energy.

The grapes are sourced from an area just east of the Macedon Ranges wine region boundary, which is one of the coolest on mainland Australia. Its warm summer days and distinctly cool nights also just happens to be the ideal conditions for Pinot Noir to slowly ripen and maintain its natural acidity. Winemaker Matt Harrop knows his area and knows pinot, having made wine at Curly Flat (Macedon Ranges) since 2017 and a 19-year stint at Shadowfax.

Why the name Silent Way? It comes from one of their favourite albums by Miles Davis which is regarded as a masterpiece and one of the most inventive recordings of all time.
