Rogue River Blue - Special Reserve

Cheese is all about seasonality, and whilst most cheeses are available most of the year, there are a few that are only around for a short period. Rogue River Blue - Special Reserve - selected by Will Studd is just one of those cheeses. Released once a year & with limited stock, its one of the most sought after blue cheeses in the world & we are delighted to have this back in the shop.

This rare North American benchmark organic blue cheese is hand made at Rogue Creamery in Central Point, Oregon for only a few weeks each year during the autumn equinox. At this time of year the creamery’s single herd of Brown Swiss & Holstein cows are at the end of their natural lactation cycle & their rich concentrated milk is infused with the esters of native grasses, hops, clover, blackberries & wild herbs that grow on the lush grazing pastures beside the beautiful Rogue River.

After the wheels of cheese have been salted & pierced they are hand wrapped in local organic handpicked Syrah vine leaves from Cow Horn Vineyard. These leaves have been macerated in local organic pear brandy from Clear Creek Distillery, the cheese is then ripened in the dairy cellars for a minimum of eight months. Its moist creamy texture has a creamy blue mould flavour with subtle hints of signature terroir including pine, wild ripened berries, hazelnuts, morels and pears.
